“Observation, Reason, Human Understanding, Courage; these make the physician.”― Martin H. Fischer

Physicians work day and night tirelessly to take care of humankind. This level of dedication is rare to find in any other profession. The above-stated quote by Martin Fischer says that observation, reasons, human understanding, and courage are the essential requirements to be a successful physician. It cannot be just a coincidence that these are the same set of qualities required to be a political leader too. A political leader should, or probably must have a sense of deep human understanding. Not many politicians have their lives connected directly to the healthcare system, and even less can empathize with patients’ problems and needs. But Dr. Monica Wehby is an exception to that list. Let’s explore her inspiring journey of becoming a leading name in Neurosurgery to her political career.

A brief introduction:

Dr. Monica Wehby is a physician from Oregon. She has a degree of MD and currently serving as a Neurosurgery Specialist in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Wehby had shown leadership qualities from the initial phase of the life when she became the first woman to graduate from UCLA’s neurosurgery program. She has served as a president of the Oregon Medical Association and the Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland. Even though Monica Wehby has achieved so much in life but she has always been humble and presented her vision in the most intelligible language so that it can reach hundreds of thousands of people.

“Career politicians are only worried about their next election, but I am worried about the next generation.”

In 2014, she contested elections as a Republican nominee for the United States Senate from Oregon. The clarity of the thought justified in the above-written statement given by Monica Wehby in a video on her YouTube channel reflects her intellectual maturity. Rather than talking about useless topics like other demagogues, she chose to fight elections based on the country’s financial condition and to bring medical reforms. She was also invited to be a part of an esteemed panelist in the State of Reform Health Policy Conference held at Hilton in 2015. She showcased her excellent oratory skills and managed to stun everyone with her thoughts on the financial burden on patients in hospitals, her idea of health reforms, and many more topics.

Concluding Note:

All of the great personalities have one thing in common, i.e., they are always true to their work. As a physician and a politician, Monica Wehby has always tried to talk about the medical reforms that are extremely important in the current Medicare scenario. She became a lingua franca between the patients and the people in the higher echelons of politics. Not just the Medicare system, but her understanding of the country’s financial deficits and her long-term vision is a much-needed asset.

We need more lovely and intellectual humans like her to raise the issues of common people!!!
